Uses of Asbestos:
Asbestos was widely used across industry and in all building types and only began to be prohibited in 1985, finally being totally prohibited in 1999. Below is a selection of common uses of asbestos containing materials:
Insulation of boilers, plant and associated pipe-work
Hand applied or pre-moulded sectional
Can contain between 5% to 85% asbestos
Crocidolite, amosite or chrysotile
Sprayed insulation
Applied to steel and concrete for fire and acoustic insulation
Contains between 55% to 85% asbestos
Mainly crocidolite or amosite
Asbestos insulating board (AIB)
General heat and fire protection
Contain 15% to 40% asbestos
Usually amosite with some chrysotile
Asbestos cement products
Panels, tanks and roofing products
Normally contain less than 15% asbestos
Mostly chrysotile but can contain crocidolite or amosite
Textured coatings
Contain 3% to 5% asbestos
Chrysotile
Textiles
Includes cloth and rope products
Contain greater than 90% asbestos
Most commonly chrysotile but can contain crocidolite
Reinforced composite materials and bituminous products
Usually less than 10% asbestos
Mostly chrysotile but can contain amosite or crocidolite
Many of these products could be present at your site especially if it is dated pre-1985. With effective surveying and ongoing management these ACMs can be controlled and made safe or, if necessary, removed.
